Siobhan Haughey bravely broke the 50m freestyle short-course Asian record.
The FINA Swimming World Cup short course competition held its first day of events in Baku, Azerbaijan. Siobhan Haughey, the 'super female flying fish' who won 2 golds and 2 silvers at the Nagoya Asian Games, continued her 'campaign' and achieved another breakthrough. In the women's 50m freestyle final held early Friday morning (the 2nd) Hong Kong time, she clocked 23.48 seconds, breaking the Asian short course record she set five years ago and won a silver medal.
Siobhan Haughey swam a 23.94 in the preliminary heats of the 50m freestyle, ranking 2nd overall and advancing to the finals that evening. In the final, the 28-year-old athlete had a reaction time of 0.66 at the start, maintained third place around the turn, and ultimately edged out Russian swimmer Gonisova, setting a new Asian record and Hong Kong record of 23.48 to claim the silver medal. Polish star Wosik won the gold with a time of 23.40. Haughey's time improved her Hong Kong record of 23.75 set at the 2021 ISL event in Italy by 0.27 seconds, which is very impressive. Haughey also entered the 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, and 200m freestyle at this meet.
The FINA Short Course Swimming World Cup, named the 'Silk Road' Circuit, is divided into three legs. The first leg is held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, from October 1 to 3. The second leg takes place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from the 8th to the 10th, while the final leg is scheduled in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, from the 15th to the 17th. Swimmers not only compete for a prize pool of 1.2 million USD but also vie for tickets to the World Short Course Swimming Championships to be held in Beijing this December. Additionally, if a swimmer wins the same event in all three legs consecutively, they can be crowned champion and awarded an extra prize of 10,000 USD.
