Japan hospital performs first surgery

TOKYO, Sept 30: A hospital in Japan has carried out the world's first surgery using sheets of commercially available heart muscle stem cells after the ground-breaking therapy was approved this year, one of the surgeons said. Sheets of muscle cells derived from regenerative products known as induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, were transplanted into the heart of a woman in her 50s during the hour-long surgery performed on Tuesday. — AFP

United Nations, Sept 30: United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Tuesday deplored military airstrikes that reportedly killed at least 50 people, including vendors, customers, transport workers and other civilians, at a market in Myanmar’s northwestern Rakhine State. In one of the deadliest attacks carried out in Rakhine since the coup of February 2021, the military reportedly hit Kyauktaw township around midday on Monday. The deceased included children and women. At least 58 people were also reportedly injured in the incident. The casualty count is expected to rise. — AP

RIYADH, Sept 30: A flight bound for Israel from the United Arab Emirates diverted to Saudi Arabia after transmitting emergency signals following a fight between the pilots rather than a hijacking, an Israeli official said on Wednesday. Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv diverted over Jordanian airspace toward Saudi Arabia, transmitting a general emergency signal before transmitting another emergency signal indicating possible unlawful interference several minutes later. — Reuters

RIYADH, Sept 30: Pakistan will deploy "whatever means are available" to defend Saudi Arabia against Iran-backed Houthi rebels, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said, signalling potential direct military involvement in the expanding West Asian crisis. Asif made the comments on Tuesday during a visit to Rome while declining to say whether Pakistani forces had already taken part in airstrikes against Iranian operators in Yemen, Politico reports. — Reuters
